At the end of the war when the federal government stopped day care funding, the Houston Settlement Association filled the gap by taking over operations of 20 centers in the city. Free, high-quality child care for families in Harris County, so parents may work or attend school. Following a 1945 polio scare, the Houston Settlement Association joined forces with the Houston Health Department to show health movies in Spanish every Tuesday night. The effort brough audiovisual education to hundreds of people in the neighborhood. What grew out of that meeting was the Houston Settlement Association, which later became BakerRipley. They moved forward with the foundational purpose to provide Houston’s underserved population a welcoming place for education, career and social aid so that they could build a better life.

Phoenix bars Little Rituals and Bitter and Twisted make Pinnacle Guide

rituals coffee house

Once I became a regular, she always got my coffee cup and protective sleeve ready for the self-pour as soon as she saw me walk in. The lovely woman whom I imagined to be the owner greeted me and everyone else who came in with a huge smile. Last year came and went with nothing to report. Then, a couple of weeks ago, the friend’s brother called. We’ve been purchasing coffee directly from the farmers who grow it since 2007, when we were just a tiny, one cafe operation.

Still, last month the Agriculture Department urged people to stomp out lanternflies by “smashing and scraping the invasive egg masses off into a plastic bag, sealing it and disposing of them” with household garbage. The agency said that eggs could turn up in tree bark, on cars and on things that have been stored outside. “If you are moving outdoor furniture or a recreational vehicle and camping equipment, check for flat, mudlike spotted lanternfly egg masses,” the agency said in a statement.

Coffee Shops in SF That Prove the City Is a Coffee Mecca

I visit on Monday, the quietest day of the week; in the hour I spend there, I estimate that 20 people buy coffees, equating to about £21 profit. The £5 coffee is coming – perhaps not today, but soon enough – and when it arrives, coffee shops may not seem like extensions of our living rooms, but more rarefied spaces, like restaurants or bars. “Customers are not ready to pay £5 daily for a regular coffee,” says Young. If they do balk, more well‑loved independents like the Red Cone will falter. All you need to make a great cup of coffee is quality ground coffee, hot water, time, and a little je ne sais quoi. If you have a balance of pleasant bitterness and tangy acidity in your cup but think you can pull out a little more sweetness, try slightly increasing your brew time or restricting the flow of water through your coffee bed with a finer grind.

The queue of parents stretched to the door and the staff appeared frazzled. I remember the sensations that follow acutely. Their bodies were found Saturday at a house on the outskirts of Oaxaca city with no outward signs of injuries. The victims were apparently related, and ranged in age from 18 to 55. Five people have died after drinking a poison potion in a Santeria "power" ritual, police in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca said Wednesday. But despite our mad-scientist pursuit of the perfect cup, we’re determined to demystify the entire coffee experience.

people die from drinking poison potion in Santeria "power" ritual, Mexican officials say

I’ll pay for it, but I’m never ordering here again. I drank every sip of the coffee, waited for the ice to melt, and drank that, too. I was out of sorts for the rest of the day.

Brew Guides

Immersion methods extract coffee by steeping. Examples are French press, cold brew, cowboy coffee, and AeroPress (which actually incorporates percolation as well). These methods bring out a heavier body and a little more sweetness in the cup, but lack some of the clarity attainable in percolation methods. These cups stand up great to cream, and are a little less finicky if you have trouble focusing before you’ve had your coffee in the morning.

We source sweet, clean, single-origin coffees, an ever changing seasonal espresso blend, and seriously the best decaf out there. The inaugural list included bars from United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Singapore, Mexico, Dubai and Australia, currently the only country where the guide has reviewers. Based on the above criteria, 25 bars were awarded one pin, 12 won two pins and none of the bars earned three pins. This week's poison deaths come just weeks after police said 50 people died in Angola after being forced to drink an herbal potion to prove they were not sorcerers. A local councilor accused traditional healers of administering the deadly concoction.

Plus, how to celebrate Mother’s Day, Memorial Day, and other holidays this month.

We’re also a pioneer of the West Coast style of light roasting that continues to illuminate the spectrum of what coffee can be. A San Francisco original since 2005, world famous and a local favorite, we’re a fully independent and woman-owned coffee roasting company. We pride ourselves in sourcing coffees from smallholder farmers whom we know.

The flowery fest kicks off this month alongside a slate of fun things to do this weekend.

Brew Coffee and Beer is celebrating its 8th anniversary this week, and Ritual is super proud to have been Brew’s roasting partner from the very beginning. We chatted with owners Alisse Cottle and Jessica Borrayo to reminisce about Brew’s journey and highlight some of the reasons it has become a Santa Rosa favorite. He said that a warmish winter had helped hold down the population last year. They need “a period of cold to be cued in correctly, cued in to the environment,” he said. “The lanternflies didn’t have that.” The city’s streak of 701 days without snow “played into this,” he said.

But in August of that year, the man called and said there was a dead female queen snake in the mud room of his house. Dragon theorized that the man’s cat had caught the snake and brought it to the house. He even wondered if the cat had chased down the first snake, only to have it get away and slink to safety in the basement. Dragon, who studies snakes as a research scientist with the New Jersey Pinelands Commission, noticed a specimen last month — the first queen snake known to have been seen in New Jersey since 1977. Coffee shops disappeared once before from UK shores.

Prices may yet increase further before the end of the year, as European roasteries attempt to import beans before scheduled EU deforestation legislation. Coffee production is also likely to be severely affected by the climate crisis, with researchers suggesting that it might halve the area of land suitable for growing beans in coming decades. A perfect blend of factors means that having a coffee out is more expensive than ever. “We are in a situation of very low stocks in the US and Europe, exacerbated by the Red Sea being blocked,” says Carlos Mera, head of the agri commodities markets team at Rabobank. “A lot of coffee comes from Vietnam to Europe and that now needs a much longer transit time.” Brazil and Vietnam, the world’s largest and second-largest producers of coffee, have experienced adverse weather.

Sullen staff, cold coffee, dirty tables. (This is Ashby’s pet peeve. “You go to sit down and it’s a sticky table,” he groans. “It’s the worst!”) When this happens, particularly if your drink is expensive, it transforms a restorative ritual into a frustrating experience. It is likely that outlets like these will be winnowed, as price rises force customers to think carefully about where they spend their money. Our overwhelming consensus at Ritual is that a scale and timer are key. Just as in baking, the ability to identify, control, and repeat the precise weights and timing of your coffee, pours, and final brew time are essential to making adjustments to a recipe you didn’t like and repeating the recipes you love. Taking as many notes with as many solid numbers as possible (especially coffee and water weights and time) can help you fine tune your brewing process, recreate the cups you loved, and avoid the ones you loved not so much.

In 2021, Brazil had a major frost, while Vietnam is in the grip of a drought. Eileen once had a shot of espresso that changed her life. She was at a cafe called Vivace in Seattle, and knew right then what she must do. Open a shop, dedicated solely to coffee, in her favorite city. Finding the gems buried in one of the world’s most actively traded commodities isn’t easy.

Charlotte FC defeats Chelsea FC in friendly match

The undoubted standout was Sterling, who was the most effective player from the second half changes. Overall, he drifted around the front line more than many expected. Sterling had a brilliant run taking on and beating several Charlotte players that led to him being free in the box and then played a dangerous cross to the far post. But unfortunately, no Chelsea players were attacking the central or right-sided areas of the box and the great individual effort from Sterling was wasted. I hope this is not an early precursor to the Blues’ attack for the season’s kickoff in August. Chelsea kicked off the second match of its North American preseason tour by traveling to Charlotte, North Carolina to take on the newly minted Charlotte FC.

Match Preview: Charlotte FC at New York City FC

Raheem Sterling also made his first Chelsea appearance after completing his £47.5 million move from Manchester City, but the west London side were undone by a stoppage-time penalty before losing the subsequent shootout. Michy Batshuayi has a free sight at goal but he cannot guide his shot past the Charlotte goalkeeper. You can find the full transcript later on right here on football.london. Charlotte FC to host Chelsea FC this summer

The Blues prepare to build on a season that ended with astrong run of form. Since January 23rd, Chelsea finished inleague play and in cup play with the draws coming in penalty-kick finallosses to Liverpool. In international play, during that span, the Blues went5-1-1 with the only loss coming in the Champions League to Real Madrid and thedraw resulting in a penalty-kick win over Villareal in the UEFA Super Cup. The match ended at 1-1 as neither side was able to find a winning goal late on. The match went to penalties, which was odd for a preseason match, but nonetheless has been the norm this year for North American club tours. The weaknesses of Mendy in goal as a penalty stopper were on display again, and Chelsea lost the shootout 5-3.

Charlotte FC defeats Chelsea FC 5-3 in penalties

The match itself was encouraging to start—from a Chelsea supporter perspective—as the midfield controlled ball progression and overall supported the attack enough to keep constant pressure on Charlotte’s defense. Particularly effective players earlier on seemed to be Ziyech with a few dribbles through and Pulisic looked more than up for the match in his home country. James was lively, and Alonso got forward with ease from his left wingback role early on. This massively played into Chelsea’s favor and the impact the two center midfielders have within Tuchel’s was apparent.

“We were good for 80 meters of the pitch, but were not good enough in the final 20 meters,” said Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel after the match. “Today is on us, they showed courage and belief, man-marking us one-on-one. Whenever you give the stadium belief like we did anything can happen”With the final kick of the game, 16-year-old Charlotte FC academy product Brian Romero won a penalty via a Trevoh Chalobah handball. That saw Daniel Rios strike from the spot and level the scoreline at 1-1.

But the momentum shifted when defender Trevoh Chalobah handled a shot from Charlotte's Brian Romero in added time for a penalty, before Daniel Rios slotted past Edouard Mendy. A ball over the top gave Michy another chance to shoot soon after but after the Belgian’s run took him inside the centre-back, the highly rated Kristijan Kahlina made a good save. Charlotte could have done better with an opportunity of their own before the interval. Conor Gallagher shoots across goal and the ball nearly falls to Raheem Sterling at the far post.

Brandt Bronico, who playedfor UNC Charlotte, leads the team in tackles from his central midfield positionand ranks third in minutes played. Rookie Ben Bender, the first pick in the2022 MLS Super Draft, has 3 goals and 3 assists this season. Goalkeeper KristijanKahlina has 5 clean sheets and a 72.7% save percentage, and Charlotte’s 23goals against ranks as the fifth-fewest in the Eastern Conference. It took a tip-over save to prevent Charlotte scoring a freak own goal at the start of the second half after Ethan Ampadu, one of 10 outfield changes at the interval and playing in midfield, had bundled the ball goalwards.

Havertz scores!

Here's all of the information you need to know about the upcoming fixture. Thomas Tuchel will hope that his team will be able to prevail against Charlotte, who were only formed in 2019. Michy Batshuayi was involved as he turned and fired towards goal.

Andre Shinyashiki, who has seen his playing time shrink under Lattanzio, will also see these minutes as critical for proving his worth as more than just a late substitute option. Meanwhile, Chelsea was coming off a friendly 2-1 win against Club America on July 16, but a loss to Liverpool FC in penalties for the FA Cup. Chelsea found the net five times in penalty kicks, but Liverpool got the edge by just one.

Ahead of Wednesday's match, WCNC Charlotte sports reporter Ashley Stroehlein sat down with goalie Kristijan Kahlina for a 1-on-1 interview. He talked about how he and the team work together, adapting to life in the United States, and how the black and blue's fans have opened their arms to him. Last week, Charlotte FC was stung with a 3-2 loss to Inter Miami FC in their second-ever meeting. Charlotte started that match strong, but Miami hit the jets toward the end of stoppage time to pull ahead. In Charlotte FC’s inaugural season in the MLS, the club is still in the hunt for a playoff spot and has a huge match against Toronto on Saturday.

The North Carolina crowd was loving the misery inflicted upon the traveling Chelsea support, and the home side did not let up after getting the equalizer. The effort level continued to wane for the Blues as the match carried on, and many supporters within the ground had enough of such a letdown performance. Fans who experienced this level of frustration, it is warranted, but again this is preseason and Tuchel was likely using a tertiary back-up plan. It makes definitive conclusions difficult, if not impossible, to ascertain. If nothing else, this gives the manager a chance to reconsider his decisions to give trial minutes, how and why the minutes did not work and how to rectify this prior to kick off against Arsenal in Orlando on July 23.

The 30 best jerk chickens in Los Angeles

We believe that Caribbean Cuisine and, specifically, the Jerk Culture is on the brink of an explosion in popularity as more segments of our society discover and, indeed, begin to crave the intensity of Jerk flavorfulness.

ha Cha Chicken

Ackee Bamboo is one of our all-around favorite Jamaican restaurants in LA. The various meats are dry-rubbed or wet-marinated with a hot spice mixture known as “Jerk Seasoning”. Jerk seasoning was originally applied just to chicken and/or pork. As the popularity grew beyond the shores of Jamaica, Jerk seasoning has been applied to other meats including beef, fish and lamb. Today, the allure of Jerk has grown so much, it has become popular to add Jerk seasoning to vegetables.

Our growth is fueled by our expertise in the authentic Caribbean method as well as our passion for maintaining strict quality standards. The diversity of our society has brought many new delicacies to the shores of our country. Some of them merely exist in small pockets of immigrants scattered among urban developments, some of them take hold and blossom into national favorites.

What's the weather like in Los Angeles?

Chef-owner Yonette Alleyne also prepares grilled jerk chicken, baked macaroni pie, slow-braised oxtail stew, and an otherworldly crab soup. The history of Caribbean residents to South LA goes back to the 1960s, when immigrants came to the U.S. via the East Coast, often New York City, and eventually to Southern California in search of warmer weather and career opportunities. A 1985 Los Angeles Times report documented Jamaicans, Belizeans, and Trinidadians settling in South LA neighborhoods, and especially Inglewood, with restaurants serving the cuisine of their home countries. Those flavors, aromatic spices, gently grilled or cooked meats and fishes, and vibrant vegetables and side dishes, are familiar to the cultures and people already in the neighborhoods south of the 10 freeway and east of the 405. Hungry Joe’s has been around for decades and is a classic Jamaican restaurant in the heart of Inglewood. We love the uniquely tangy bite that the jerk chicken has here, but frankly, it’s the rice that takes Hungry Joe’s version to a completely new level.

Exceptional Caribbean Restaurants in Los Angeles

The crispy garnaches with black beans, diced onion, and queso fresco atop fried masa tortillas are best consumed while piping hot. Cha Cha Chicken is probably best known for its tropical patio and having one of the best BYOB policies in all of LA, but the fact is, the food at this order-at-the-counter spot in Santa Monica is good, too. The Jerk Spot is a Culver City standby and an excellent option if you’re in the neighborhood, short on time, and craving some very solid Jamaican food. The standout element of their jerk chicken is the spicy sauce that comes on the side with every order. They also give you the option of ordering their jerk chicken with just white meat or dark meat.

It’s imperative to order a sangria or mojito immediately upon stepping into Mojitos. Those visiting on the right night will be treated to live music along with notable versions of Cuban-style pollo a la plancha and vaca frita, grilled flank steak marinated in plenty of garlic and lime. Don’t hesitate to order a Cubano sandwich, it’s one of the city’s best.

The spice-laden curry has the hefty gaminess of goat while retaining the meat’s heady characteristics. The menu boasts a range of Jamaican flavors, from jerk chicken and short ribs to escovitch fish. The small outdoor patio in View Park-Windsor Hills makes the idea of island time in Los Angeles feel remotely possible. Normally a festive place for beach-style feast, Little Belize comes from Laverne Smith and her sisters, who took ownership of the restaurant nine years ago in 2012. It’s been said that the LA area has the most Belizeans in the U.S., with notable restaurants Belizean Paradise, the Blue Hole, Tracey’s, and Saraba Garifuna as the community’s other stalwarts. At the moment, there’s only a smattering of outdoor tables at the moment as service is mostly inclined to takeout.

You’re definitely going to want to get the combo, which is easily good for two meals. Be sure to throw in a few curry chicken patties on the side as well. Chef Don Coley opened the original Coley’s in Leimert Park in 1982.

However on Sundays, the restaurant builds an indoor-outdoor dining with more tables and a live band, and by mid-March, they’ll expand dinner hours and reopen the dining room. Currently, the daytime-only operation is enough to draw locals to the crispy fish panades, tinted almost orange and fried to perfection, while the stew chicken is probably the most popular plate on the menu. Cooked tender and slathered with a peppery gravy, it comes with rice, beans, and potato salad to help round it into a solid lunch. The rotis are the main draw here, the beautiful flaky flatbread filled to the max with everything from beef and goat to curry chicken. The doubles are excellent too, stuffed with stewed chickpeas, chopped cucumbers, and a spicy sauce that hits the throat hard. Hours are mostly limited to weekends, so be sure to call orders in ahead of arrival.

Serving the Mid-City area for over 35 years, Natraliart is one of the oldest Jamaican restaurants in LA - and also one of the very best. The menu is stacked with tremendous dishes like oxtails, saltfish, and curry shrimp, but for us, the jerk chicken will always be the star of the show. Unlike many spots on this list, Natraliart doesn’t lean on a heavy marinade or sauce to carry the dish—it’s the chicken itself that does the talking here. Tender, perfectly cooked meat with a smoky-spice flavor that’ll stay on your lips for hours, the jerk chicken at Natraliart should be on everyone’s priority list. The bustling, almost hectic sounds of Country Style along La Brea Avenue holds court over Inglewood’s western edge. Opened in 2019, Country Style sports great portions and a classic menu of curry goat, brown stew chicken, patties, and even ackee and saltfish, the national dish of Jamaica.

Whatever route you end up going, make sure you order some reggae bread, too. Jerk Lab is a restaurant that serves authentic Jamaican and Caribbean cuisine in Los Angeles, California. We are known for jerk chicken, escovitch fish, and other Jamaican favorites. When you dine with us, expect to have a flavorful and delightful experience. Merlin Garcia, a former LA Public Safety Department worker, started a street food stand and catering company in her spare time. Now Garcia has a proper South LA brick-and-mortar restaurant that serves fantastic doubles, stewed oxtails, corn soup, and rotis that represent the varied and deeply delicious food of Trinidad.

These days he operates out of Sherman Oaks and remains fiercely dedicated to making stellar renditions of brown stew chicken, callaloo and saltfish (vegans can order the flavorful callaloo on its own), coco bread, and a cheesy beef pattie. If you’re like us and prefer your jerk chicken unabashedly spicy, then Little Kingston is the place for you. If you aren’t feeling a full combo plate though, you can also just get a side of jerk chicken for $7, which by the way, is still a very good-sized portion.

We believe that Caribbean Cuisine and, specifically, the Jerk Culture is on the brink of an explosion in popularity as more segments of our society discover and, indeed, begin to crave the intensity of Jerk flavorfulness.

You’re definitely going to want to get the combo, which is easily good for two meals. Be sure to throw in a few curry chicken patties on the side as well. Chef Don Coley opened the original Coley’s in Leimert Park in 1982.

Pasadena Fish Market doesn't just serve fresh seafood from its fully-stocked deli counter. They've also got an excellent variety of Jamaican dishes, including some notably succulent jerk chicken. If you’re looking for a jerk marinade with a little more heat, you'll love that the chicken here is slathered in a punchy, vinegar-forward sauce that'll make you sweat. Ask for extra sauce on the side to pour over your rice and peas, plantains, and collard greens. Los Angeles’s only Garifuna restaurant migrated from its roving truck format to a permanent stand in South LA’s Mercado La Paloma in 2022. Though Donna’s strip mall facade is unassuming, it is quite homey on the inside.

Prime spots are along the lake from the pier, or along the river at its base. Important green spaces within the neighborhood include Turning Point Park Trail and Rain Garden on the Genesee River.

To get there, take St. Paul Blvd to the public parking lot on Parkview Terrace. The eastern pier offers a less crowded environment and better views of the shores to the east. Rochester’s own electric trolley system was soon extended to the park, taking customers away from the railway. A 10 cent admission was then implemented at the park gate; although free admission was still given for rail customers. Costa Concordia disaster Collision, Rescue, Salvage, & Facts

italy cruise ship accident

Cruise ship shop worker Fabio Costa said when people realised there was a serious problem, there were scenes of desperation. Then the ship rolled again, now listing to the right, and the captain ordered the ship to be abandoned. "The boat started shaking. The noise - there was panic, like in a film, dishes crashing to the floor, people running, people falling down the stairs," said survivor Fulvio Rocci.

Costa Concordia captain to appeal against 16-year prison sentence for manslaughter – video

Italy will mark the 10th anniversary of the Costa Concordia cruise ship disaster on Thursday with a daylong commemoration. Ortelli was later on hand when, in September 2013, the 115,000-ton, 300-meter (1,000-foot) long cruise ship was righted vertical off its seabed graveyard in an extraordinary feat of engineering. The dinner plates that flew off the tables when the rocks first gashed the hull. The final mad scramble to evacuate the listing liner and then the extraordinary generosity of Giglio islanders who offered shoes, sweatshirts and shelter until the sun rose and passengers were ferried to the mainland. Ortelli was later on hand when, in September 2013, the 115,000-ton, 1,000-foot long cruise ship was righted vertical off its seabed graveyard in an extraordinary feat of engineering.

Trials

Passengers aboard the Concordia were largely left on their own to find life jackets and a functioning lifeboat after the captain steered the ship close too shore in a stunt. He then delayed an evacuation order until it was too late, with lifeboats unable to lower because the ship was listing too heavily. Schettino argued that he fell into a lifeboat because of how the ship was listing to one side, but this argument proved unconvincing. In 2015, a court found Schettino guilty of manslaughter, causing a shipwreck, abandoning ship before passengers and crew were evacuated and lying to authorities about the disaster. In addition to Schettino, Ferrarini and Rusli Bin, the other people who received convictions for their role in the disaster were Cabin Service Director Manrico Giampedroni, First Officer Ciro Ambrosio and Third Officer Silvia Coronica.

'We all suffer from PTSD': 10 years after the Costa Concordia cruise disaster, memories remain

The vessel was on the edge of an underwater cliff, leading to worries that the ship might slip and break apart, causing an oil spill. To lessen any potential damage, oil booms were placed around the wreckage, and in February 2012 salvage workers began removing more than 2,000 tons of fuel; the undertaking was completed the following month. On the evening of January 13, 2012, Umberto Trotti heard the terrified cries of his wife and baby in the lifeboat below, and threw himself off the capsizing Italian cruise ship. Mr Ordona said his colleagues and passengers were waiting to use lifeboats but the change in the direction the boat was sinking prompted them to seek lifeboats on the other side of the ship.

Passengers and personnel

The Costa Concordia began to drift and, investigators later explained, list as a result of water in the damaged hull. By 10.15pm, the Italian coastguard began getting reports of trouble on board directly from the passengers, but Schettino still did not react. The 3,299 passengers who boarded the Costa Concordia on 13 January in the Italian port city of Civitavecchia for their seven-day cruise around the Mediterranean had much to enjoy. There were 1,500 cabins, one of the largest fitness centres at sea, a Turkish bath and solarium, a poolside movie theatre on the main pool deck, and 13 bars, including one devoted to cognac. It was a national drama with an eccentric cast of characters – a reckless villain, his secret lover and a hard-done-by hero – that has riveted the country for three years. The hulking mass of the capsized 115,000-tonne cruise ship, which for 900 days lay seemingly unmovable and partly submerged in the Mediterranean, became a metaphor for the political and economic ills of an entire nation.

Ortelli was later on hand when, in September 2013, the 115,000-ton, 300-metre long cruise ship was righted vertical off its seabed graveyard in an extraordinary feat of engineering. The anniversary comes as the cruise industry, shut down in much of the world for months because of the COVID-19 pandemic, is once again in the spotlight because of virus outbreaks that threaten passenger safety. "I imagine it like a nail stuck to the wall that marks that date, as a before and after," he said, recounting how he joined the rescue effort that night, helping pull ashore the dazed, injured and freezing passengers from lifeboats.

The family were unsure whether to go back to Giglio for a ceremony Thursday and a candle-lit procession marking 10 years since the disaster. Mr Metcalf, from Dorset, told the BBC his daughter had phoned to say she was safe but that she had feared she would have to jump into the sea. She said blankets and clothes were provided for those who arrived on the island, while churches and schools were opened to ensure that people had a roof over their head. "Everything happened really fast. Everybody tried to get a life boat and people started to panic. A lot of people were falling down the stairs and some were hurt because things fell on them.

The 19-hour process involved specially built underwater platforms, cranes, and some 500 people. In July 2014 the Concordia—outfitted with a number of steel containers serving as flotation devices—was towed to Genoa, Italy, where it was dismantled for scrap. The doomed ship struck rocks just off the Mediterranean island on the night of January 13 with 4,229 people from 70 countries on board, just as many passengers were sitting down for supper on the first night of their cruise. The rusting liner, which has been floated from its watery grave in the biggest salvage operation of a passenger ship ever performed, will be towed away to the port of Genoa in northwest Italy to be dismantled and scrapped.

A coast guard member angrily told him on the phone to “Get back on board, damn it! Schettino was convicted of multiple manslaughter as well as abandoning ship after leaving before all the passengers had reached safety. The ship's captain, Francesco Schettino, had been performing a sail-past salute of Giglio when he steered the ship too close to the island and hit the jagged reef, opening a 230-foot gash in the side of the cruise liner. With Giglio Island lying in a protected marine area, environmental issues relating to the Concordia wreck were of particular concern.

Costa noted that since the disaster, it undertaken the massive operation to right the ship, remove it, and restore the damaged seabed. Prosecutors blamed a delayed evacuation order and conflicting instructions given by crew for the chaos that ensued as passengers scrambled to get off the ship. "I felt like (my daughters) were going to get trampled, and putting my arms around them and just holding them together and letting the sea of people go by us." In a first step to prevent pollution of the shore and assist in a refloat the ship, its oil and fuel tanks were emptied.

Schettino, later sentenced to 16 years for the shipwreck, delayed sounding the alarm. Ship horns will sound and church bells ring at 9.45pm to mark the moment the liner, owned by Costa Crociere, subsidiary of US based giant Carnival, struck an outcrop, after captain Francesco Schettino ordered a sail-by "salute" to the Tuscan island. A memorial service was held on Giglio on Thursday (Jan 13) to mark 10 years since the disaster, a wreath was thrown into the water in memory of the victims and a candle-lit procession planned. The youngest victim of the disaster was a five-year-old girl named Dayana Arlotti, who drowned with her father after they were told there was no space in a lifeboat.

Magnotta, who has written a book called "The Pianist of Costa Concordia", said he did as he was trained to do, and reassured passengers the captain would make an announcement. People in the Vienna Bar were listening to pianist Antimo Magnotta, who fell off his stool as the ship lurched. Paolo Maspero, still in his chef's hat, "took my six-month old son in his arms. The water was coming in"."If he hadn't come to get us we would have died," said Trotti, who could not swim. Evacuation began over an hour after the collision, by which point the lifeboats on one side were unusable. De Falco became such a hero that, when it emerged more than a year later that he had been transferred out of operational service into a desk job, his apparent mistreatment created a new spate of soul-searching in Italy. Some suggested the country did not know how to reward people who showed good character.

The ship - roughly twice the size of the Titanic - will be dragged up the Corsica channel by two tug boats at a speed of just two knots (3.7 kilometres, 2.3 miles) per hour, and is expected to reach Genoa in four days, weather permitting. Video taken by passengers at the time showed scenes of chaos and confusion as the Costa Concordia started to list heavily. As befitting a star attraction, the captain arrived Monday at the makeshift courthouse through the back door in a car with darkened windows. The case of Francesco Schettino, 51, was of such enormous interest that a theater had to be turned into a courtroom in the Tuscan city of Grosseto to accommodate all those who had a legitimate claim to be at the closed-door hearing over the disaster. "He was still helping them when the ship tilted over sharply, and people fell into the water. No-one saw him after that." The body of Russel, a 32-year-old waiter, was recovered three years after the disaster, when the rusting wreck was dismantled.

"When I was getting into the lifeboat amid all the chaos I thought this might be my last day alive," he said as he gazed out at the wreck from the port. Precision sensors attached to the sides of the ship will monitor for possible cracks in the crippled hull, while underwater cameras will watch for debris washing out of the vessel amid fears toxic waste could spill into the sea. An Indonesian helmsman, for instance, failed twice to understand orders, veering to the right instead of the left as he was told by Schettino, who joked he should pay closer attention or “we will go on the rocks,” only minutes before they dram aground. Schettino is one of nine people facing charges, although eyewitnesses, leaked audio and video recordings, a pre-trial report and even the liner’s owners, Costa Crociere (a subsidiary of Miami-based Carnival), appeared to put the blame squarely on him. The liner, carrying 4,229 people from 70 countries, ran aground while many passengers were at dinner. Martine Muller and her husband were given the cruise as a birthday gift from her children.
